What is Tuckpointing and why is it important?

tuckpointing is a repair process where the mortar joints between bricks on a chimney or a wall are removed and replaced. It’s a way to fix deteriorating mortar and restore the structural integrity and appearance of the chimney. Tuckpointing is a very important service if you own a home that is made out of brinks.

Here’s how it works:

  1. Old mortar is ground or chiseled out (usually about 1/2 to 3/4 inch deep).

  2. New mortar is carefully applied to match the original color and style.

  3. Sometimes, a second, contrasting mortar color is used to create the illusion of very fine joints – this is where the term “tuckpointing” originated.

Why it’s done:

  • Prevents water damage: Cracked or missing mortar can let water seep in, causing internal damage.

  • Stops brick shifting: Keeps the chimney stable.

  • Improves appearance: Fresh mortar makes the chimney look new and well-maintained.

  • Extends chimney lifespan: Delays the need for full rebuilds.

It’s especially important in areas with freeze-thaw cycles like in Chicago, since water in the joints can expand and cause more damage.

Before and After Tuckpointing services

What is Tuckpointing for and is it just for Chimneys?

No Tuckpointing is for any type of structure that contains bricks. Some of the reasons for tuckpointing are:

  • Structural Integrity
Old or damaged mortar weakens the stability of brickwork. Tuckpointing reinforces the joints to help keep the structure solid and safe—whether it’s a chimney, wall, or foundation.

  • Waterproofing
Gaps or cracks in mortar let moisture in, which can cause interior leaks, mold, or even damage to the bricks themselves. Tuckpointing seals those joints and helps prevent water infiltration.

  • Preventing Costlier Repairs
Ignoring deteriorating mortar can lead to bricks loosening or collapsing—tuckpointing fixes the problem early before it turns into a rebuild situation.

  • Aesthetic Refresh
Tuckpointing also improves the look of old or weathered brick. Especially if you use a contrasting color in the fine “tuck” lines, it gives the appearance of precise, clean joints.

  • Energy Efficiency
Sealing mortar joints can reduce drafts and energy loss in buildings, especially older ones without modern insulation.

What happends when you negelect Tuckpointing on a commercial or residential structure?

1. Water Damage

  • Cracked or missing mortar lets rain and snow seep into the joints.

  • That moisture can get behind the bricks, leading to interior leaks, mold, rot, and staining on walls.

2. Freeze-Thaw Damage

  • In colder climates, water inside the joints freezes, expands, and forces the bricks apart.

  • Over time, this leads to spalling (flaking or popping bricks) and serious structural issues.

3. Brick Movement or Collapse

  • Mortar holds bricks together. If it crumbles away, bricks can shift, become loose, or even fall out.

  • This puts stress on the entire structure—especially vulnerable areas like chimneys, arches, or load-bearing walls.

4. Higher Repair Costs Later

  • Letting it go too long may mean full rebuilding of parts of the wall or chimney, which is way more expensive than tuckpointing.

5. Lower Property Value & Curb Appeal

6. Pest Intrusion

How do you know when you need our Tuckpointing services?

It’s smart to inspect brickwork every few years, especially after harsh winters or heavy rain seasons. Chimneys, old brick homes, and retaining walls are common problem areas. Look closely at the joints between the bricks. If the mortar is crumbling, cracked, or completely gone in spots — it’s time.
